There is a reason why we chose our company tagline to be “no one climbs alone.” At Digital Mountaineers, we root our mission to help those that help others in fostering inclusion, equity, and belonging. We honor every individual, regardless of who they love or how they identify. Like so many others, we felt disgust when we read that the U.S. Supreme Court has been formally asked to reconsider and overturn the landmark 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges, which guaranteed same-sex marriage rights nationwide. A reconsideration brought forward by none other than the thrice divorced, vainglorious, hypocrite – Kim Davis.
Religious people have the right to interpret the biblical definition of marriage as they see fit. Faith governs the believer; laws govern the citizen.
In a free country, we must separate legal principles from religious doctrines to ensure our laws serve all citizens equally, free from the influence of any single viewpoint. Put simply: no one’s faith should be used to measure another person’s rights. No belief, no matter how deeply held, grants someone the authority to deny others the rights our laws protect. The Supreme Court must only rule on legality, and not interpret the truth of scripture.
With the current state of our world and the continued attacks on marginalized communities, we refuse to stay silent.
At Digital Mountaineers we unequivocally affirm:
- Marriage equality is both a civil and human right. No policy should undermine the freedom to marry or the equitable treatment of LGBTQ+ individuals.
- Inclusivity is essential. Diversity, equity, and inclusion guides every aspect of our work. We believe that an inclusive environment helps to strengthen both our shared humanity, and the fabric of society.
- “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” –Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. When equality is threatened, humanity must rise in defense, not retreat.
We will continue to stand side-by-side with the LGBTQ+ community, and use our available platforms to amplify the voices of those most directly impacted by this issue. Our team will keep supporting and and elevating organizations and changemakers that are working for justice and equality.
In the Constitution, it is stated that “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” are the three inalienable rights that are “endowed to us by the Creator”. Our government was established to protect those rights.
Every person deserves the freedom to live authentically, love openly, and build a life with the person they choose. Denying our citizens the right to marry is denying the very freedoms this nation was founded to protect.
We will not be silent until equality becomes the law of the land – once and for all.
